Phil Perry

2Kings 6-7

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
God’s Provision and Power

In a series of stories involving battles, sieges, intrigue and famine, the writer points out the utter disregard for God in ancient Israel. He is ignored in victory, blamed in defeat and marginalized when He relieves suffering. Through it all Elisha is faithful and true...

2Kings 5

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
Elisha and Naaman

Elisha has a vivid encounter with a famous general of his day named Naaman. This story is filled with lots of interesting details and side intrigue; yet it is ultimately a story of faith in action. Faith requires more than just speaking truth, it requires living truth. To truly believe something must alter our thinking and manner of existing...

2Kings 4-8

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
Elisha and the Shunamite Woman

Once of the great stories in the life of Elisha is his relationship with the woman from Shunem. She is wealthy and happily married. Elisha comes into her life and is both a blessing and perhaps a curse. God grows her faith and stands to teach us some valuable lessons about trusting God in all things...

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
God’s Care for His Servants

Through a series of smaller events, we see in the life of Elisha God’s concern over seemingly trivial issues.  These issues are the ones that fill our days with anxiety, stress and care.  What will we eat, how do we pay our bills, broken and lost items; fill us with turmoil.  God sees all of these things and meets our needs, if we will allow Him…

Elisha Takes Over

Transitions are never easy whether in life or business or ministry. Elisha and Elijah's transition happened in a rather rapid and shocking manner; Elijah suddenly was gone and Elisha is left holding his coat. What kind of ministry and prophet would he be? Would he be accepted and would a change in spokesperson have any effect on the nation?

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
Elijah's Final Days

Elijah's final days are illustrative of the decline of godliness in Israel. Idolatry, political manipulation and false prophets are intertwined with the transition to a new prophet in Elisha. Israel's final days are numbered and the nation sinks deeper into self-reliance and away from Yahweh. Elijah is called to remain faithful, clearly not a politically correct move...

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
Elijah vs. Jezebel

After Elijah's great victory, you would think he would feel invincible, yet we see him sinking into a deep depression filled with anxiety and fear. The life of the prophet is one of great highs and lows. The prophet needed to be grounded in who God and trust Him implicitly...

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
Elijah and the prophets of Baal

Elijah is a story of danger and intrigue in the Old Testament.  He struggled with feeling alone and isolated.  He was tested and tried, threatened and bullied, yet God used Him to warn the 10 Northern tribes that it was time to repent and return to God.  His days are similar to ours…

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
The Early Prophets of Samuel, Gad and Nathan

The early men offer a glimpse into why the office of Prophet came to be so important. This office was filled with brave men who spoke the truth even when it was not convenient and certainly was dangerous. They were not politically correct but spoke faithfully what God asked of them to say...

The Prophets - God’s Spokesmen
Moses

We begin today an exploration of the ministry of the prophets. Prophecy is mentioned from Genesis to Revelation, but it is a ministry we don't see much in church today. Perhaps the greatest of the prophets is Moses, the standard bearer for all of the prophets. We have much to learn about speaking for God...

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Conclusion

We conclude our look at the book of Ephesians with Paul's closing remarks. Probably penned with his own hand originally, this is his signature block to the book. He commissions the messenger with this book and gives them 4 wishes or desires that he has for them. These wishes are helpful for us to know how we should pray for one another...

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Armed for Battle, part 4

The final weapon given to combat the evil one is prayer. Paul drops the analogy and goes straight for the application—we need to pray. Pray is our opportunity to proclaim complete dependency upon God. Our first prayer is one for rescue. All other prayers are based in the fact that we have been rescued. Are you trusting in God?

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Armed for Battle, part 3

Paul gives 2 more pieces of armor, the helmet and the short sword or dagger. These last two items would be the last items a Roman soldier took to prepare for battle and are critical to the life of the soldier. These represent salvation and God's word, tremendous gifts from God to us...

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Armed for Battle, part 2

Continuing in Paul's illustration, we will consider the footwear and shield of the soldier. Peace and faith are the underlying truths of this metaphor, our lives need to be defined by them. Peace is something humanity desperately strives for and fails to find. Faith is a noble object that people desire but usually misplace. Both peace and faith are given to us to defeat the evil one...

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Armed for Battle, part 1

Paul uses a visual so familiar to the Ephesians—Roman soldiers and their armor—to explain spiritual truth. He challenges them to stand and be strong, not in their own strength but through the resources that God gives us. We are expected to be victorious in our journey called life. All that we need has been given to us, so will we be successful?

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Spiritual Warfare

Paul begins to turn towards the conclusion of this letter but not without an in-depth object lesson about "why". Why write this letter, why does Jesus love His church, why submit to one another, why the diversity of gifts, why, why, why? Because we are locked in a battle many of us are unaware of. A battle for the hearts and souls of men, one we are close to losing in the West...

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Employees and Employers

Paul continues with the subject of submission and relationships. After family relationships, perhaps who we spend the most time with and have the greatest impact with is those we work with. Some days we may spend more time on the job than we do at home. Paul addresses relationships and submission at work next...
