Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Conclusion

We conclude our look at the book of Ephesians with Paul's closing remarks. Probably penned with his own hand originally, this is his signature block to the book. He commissions the messenger with this book and gives them 4 wishes or desires that he has for them. These wishes are helpful for us to know how we should pray for one another...

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Armed for Battle, part 4

The final weapon given to combat the evil one is prayer. Paul drops the analogy and goes straight for the application—we need to pray. Pray is our opportunity to proclaim complete dependency upon God. Our first prayer is one for rescue. All other prayers are based in the fact that we have been rescued. Are you trusting in God?

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Armed for Battle, part 3

Paul gives 2 more pieces of armor, the helmet and the short sword or dagger. These last two items would be the last items a Roman soldier took to prepare for battle and are critical to the life of the soldier. These represent salvation and God's word, tremendous gifts from God to us...

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Armed for Battle, part 2

Continuing in Paul's illustration, we will consider the footwear and shield of the soldier. Peace and faith are the underlying truths of this metaphor, our lives need to be defined by them. Peace is something humanity desperately strives for and fails to find. Faith is a noble object that people desire but usually misplace. Both peace and faith are given to us to defeat the evil one...

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Armed for Battle, part 1

Paul uses a visual so familiar to the Ephesians—Roman soldiers and their armor—to explain spiritual truth. He challenges them to stand and be strong, not in their own strength but through the resources that God gives us. We are expected to be victorious in our journey called life. All that we need has been given to us, so will we be successful?

Ephesians 6

Ephesians
Spiritual Warfare

Paul begins to turn towards the conclusion of this letter but not without an in-depth object lesson about "why". Why write this letter, why does Jesus love His church, why submit to one another, why the diversity of gifts, why, why, why? Because we are locked in a battle many of us are unaware of. A battle for the hearts and souls of men, one we are close to losing in the West...

Employees and Employers

Paul continues with the subject of submission and relationships. After family relationships, perhaps who we spend the most time with and have the greatest impact with is those we work with. Some days we may spend more time on the job than we do at home. Paul addresses relationships and submission at work next...

Children and Parents

Paul continues with the subject of submission and relationships.  He goes from husbands and wives to their relationship with their children.  These simple words are not so simple to always apply, but with God’s help we can become better families and more importantly better examples to a lost world of God’s intended order…

Marriage, part 2: Husbands love your wives

Paul’s teaching on marriage continues with a long section devoted to husbands.  It is easier to quantify submission, it is much harder to demonstrate agape love that a husband is commanded to have for his wife.  In our sin and desire for control, men we want our wives to respect us; but in reality the greater command here is for us to love our wives with God’s kind of love, do we?

Ephesians 5

Ephesians
Marriage, part 1: Wives and Submission

Paul gets even more practical over the next several verses talking about how families and business are to reflect living lives that are Spirit filled.  He addresses women first and then at length the husbands.  We will look at wives and marriage this week…

Spirit Filled Living

Paul continues his very practical section on what it means to be a follower of Jesus by emphasizing spirit filled living.  At salvation we are sealed (1:13) with the Spirit, Paul now tells us what that means. Are you living a Spirit filled life?

Ephesians 5

Ephesians
Children of Light

Paul uses the metaphor of light to compare/contrast how we are to live.  We come from darkness and are called to reflect the light of God in our lives.  Unfortunately too often we find ourselves desiring the darkness instead of the light we are called to live in…

Imitators of God

We are called to imitate God our Father in our most intimate life.  We live in culture consumed with speech and sex.  This section address both of these matters and gives us insight into how God expects us to live in this crazy world of ours…

Ephesians 4

Ephesians
Don’t Grieve God

Paul gets intensely practical now in comparing the old and new man. In a series of contrasts Paul makes a clear distinction between the way of the world and the Way of God. It is so clear that there really can be no grey area; we either are living life as God wants or we are living like the world...

Ephesians 4

Ephesians
Out with the Old, in with the New

There is constant tension between what we want to do and what we are to do. This tension affects the unity of the church because we are made up of sinners and our sin natures impact our relationships. Paul reminds us that we need to stop living/thinking like the world and put on Jesus...

Growing Up

This section about gifts and growing up is an extremely important passage on God’s purpose and intention for the church.  There are many models and purposes out there, but none compare to this God inspired purpose statement.  The church is not designed to entertain you, meet your social needs or fix societies problems…
