Sunday’s Joy!

That Sunday morning so long ago was the pivotal point in history. It was on that day that God flipped the world on edge. While the cross is the hinge point of history, it is the resurrection that confirms that truth to us. Little did those women realize that walking to the tomb on that early Sunday morning would be a journey millions would take later as well.

Dark Sabbath

The darkness of Friday turns into the bleakness of Saturday. While the gospels record little between the cross and the resurrection; there are some important lessons to learn. How would we have reacted to His death? Would guilt lead us to flee? Would sin cause us to doubt? Would we respond in faith and trust?

The Cross, part 2

Continuing the focus on the cross, let us look at the statements made on the cross and the immediate effects of His death. We see darkness and despair, confusion and chaos; but hope and salvation are also present. What looks like defeat is turned into victory!

The Cross, part 1

The pivotal moment in all of history is the cross. All that goes before and all that comes after finds meaning in the cross. Here we see clearly what God thinks about us and our sin problem. We understand what God’s love means to us. We begin to get a grasp on the Holiness of God and His attributes of justice and mercy.

Jesus Before Pilate

Friday morning and the scene shifts to the makeshift court of Pilate, the provincial Roman governor. He comes across as a weak even sympathetic character, yet he was strong enough to sign the death warrant for Jesus. The crowd is whipped into a frenzy demanding Jesus death. It is a dark morning, one that finds Jesus hated and condemned for us…

The Arrest and Trial

Thursday night into Friday morning finds Jesus arrested and brought to trial. Betrayed by a friend, the other friends with Him flee in fear. He is falsely accused, abused, slandered and found guilty by a kangaroo court. The Evil One uses every tactic at his disposal to undermine and destroy Jesus…

The Last Supper

Thursday night of the Passion weeks finds us with a mix of the Old and the New as Jesus imparts final instruction to His disciples and begins a new tradition. For the disciples it seems to be business as usual; but for Jesus the raw emotion is right at the surface. Through it all, He is driven by His love for others, are we?

A Costly Gift

In the midst of the Passion Week, the Gospels record an event of pure worship and love that stands in stark contrast to the hatred all around it. While many of the details of this story may seem strange culturally to us, we see the genuine love and care for Jesus. Do we love Him as much as this woman did? Would we give our very best, our all to Him? Is He worth it?

Will He find us ready?

Be on your Guard! The disciples as Jesus about the future and he tells them what they need to know, not necessarily what they want to hear. He wants them to see the future though the lenses of the gospel and the hope of his return. He urges them and us to be ready, doing the work he has called us to do until then.

Questions and Answers

The confrontation between Jesus and the religious leaders continues. Remember, this all plays out under the context of authority. They questioned who Jesus was and by what authority He could come into their Temple and disrupt their style of worship. It was not their Temple, Law or Worship, but His. Jesus masterfully puts them into their places with a series of questions and responses…

Government and our responsibility to it…

Sometime during the Passion Week, the religious leaders continued to press their case against Jesus. They were looking for an excuse to get rid of Him; even using strange bedfellows to trip Him up. The first assault wave focused on the growing tension between the religious and the political. What side would Jesus fall on, thus giving ammunition to the other side to bring about His demise…

Authority

Tuesday of the Passion Week and Jesus is finally confronted by the religious leaders. I am sure they are upset about the entry on Sunday and the temple cleansing on Tuesday; but they also fear the reaction of the crowds. They demand of Jesus to know by what authority He does what He does. Jesus, in an indirect and brilliant fashion, points out their culpability in not accepting Him. Jesus has clearly demonstrated who He is and from where He comes; He has shown authority over sickness and sin and Satan. It is up to them to believe…

Fig Trees, Corruption and Faith

Monday of the Passion Week finds Jesus with a fig-less tree and a temple overrun with merchants. The fig tree incident has caused some to wonder about Jesus psyche on the last week. They see Him as angry and stressed out. I think the better understanding here though is He was disappointed. Friday is on His mind, no doubt, but He is disappointed that in almost 1,500 years Israel has still not gotten what God is about. Could He say the same thing about us after 2,000 years?

The 1st Palm Sunday

Jesus Passion week begins with the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. For the first time He is publicly called the Messiah and aspirations for the coming Kingdom are expressed by the crowds. Can you imagine the wonder and bewilderment for those in Jerusalem who had no idea what was going on? Who is this guy, what does this all mean? Can He be trusted? Jesus wants to be King in our lives, is He?

Not Being Served

An embarrassing power grab and a miracle occur on the road to Jerusalem. James and John sense the importance of this trip, but wrongly assume Jesus is going to set up His kingdom. They selfishly pursue their own dreams and expose their own wrong motives for following Christ. Too often we are just like them…

Eternal Life will Cost you Everything

A respected man humbly asks Jesus the most important question all of us need the answer to. What must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus answer surprises him. It will cost him all he holds dear. Be honest with yourself, how far will you go to follow Jesus? He asks us to give it all to him, and promises that it will be worth it.

Jesus Finds the Insignificant Important

As Jesus gets closer to Jerusalem we catch a glimpse at the things that are important to him. He cares more that we follow the spirit of the law rather than trying to be justified by a technicality and he always has a heart for the otherwise overlooked. Do you have a heart like Jesus? What is important to you?

Kingdom Life Characteristics

A surprising incident arises with the disciples…they sound uncomfortably like us! Jesus overhears them arguing about who is the greatest and He uses it to explain what the Kingdom will really look like. His words should resonate with us today…

Unbelief and Prayer

From the transfiguration mountain top experience to the valley of unbelief, we see Jesus continuing towards Jerusalem. He finds the disciples in a predicament that they can’t solve because of their unbelief. Jesus swoops in to rescue them and is dismayed at the lack of faith in the crowd as well. Caught in the middle is a boy who desperately needs to be freed…
